A HEDONIST HISTORY LESSON
It was Brigitte Bardot who first tempted hedonists down to St Tropez. The young sex symbol was a breathless advertisement for the resort, shimmying suggestively on camera in her 1956 movie And God Created Woman. The scene is similarly liberal 50 years on. The Vieux Port establishments that once served Bardot and Alain Delon now attract the likes of George Clooney and Keith Richards.
BILLION DOLLAR BEACH PARTY
The morning migration of superyachts from St Tropez is mythical. After breakfast in the Vieux Port a billion-dollar parade pours out into the bay. The destination of this exodus is equally fabled: the sun-kissed beach of Plage de Pampelonne. The most licentious beach club on this 5km of ice-white sand is Club 55.
Ordering merely a single magnum of Deutz is considered parsimonious. But spraying it over your dining guests is de rigueur.
ROSÉ, THE TASTE OF ST TROPEZ
Visit any of the French Riviera’s gourmet restaurants – including the Cap d’Antibes’ Eden Roc – and you’ll have sipped a bottle of Château Minuty Prestige. This illustrious vineyard pans across the St Tropez peninsula in a picturesque tangle of ancient vines. Oenophiles may dip into the Minuty cellars, where more than 80% of the Château’s output is table-topping rosé.
THE SPORT OF KINGS
The Polo Club Saint-Tropez attracts aficionados from around the globe. With at least one polo match per day between April and August, it’s easy to see why. Match spectators tend to draw crowds themselves: Queen Silvia of Sweden, LVMH magnate Delphine Arnault and Agnelli heir Lapo Elkann are regular visitors. First-timers may hone their stick and ball skills, mallet swinging techniques and other basics with private polo classes.
DANCE ‘TIL DAWN
There’s a lot of places to party in St Tropez. Cocktail hour kicks off at Le Papagayo as the evening passeggiata throngs through the Vieux Port. Le VIP Room pulls in younger revelers – Paris Hilton drops by when in town. But the clubbing crown belongs to Les Caves du Roy. This den of hedonism pulses with beautiful people from Moscow, Rio, Paris and London. Owner-impresario Jean de Colmont keeps the celebrity-fuelled party throbbing until dawn.
