diving with giants
Up close and personal with the Pacific Manta Ray
about 30 miles south of san benedicto lays the island of socorro
Home to a small Mexican Naval Station, the island is all but uninhabited. However, at various times of the year it is visited by some of the largest marine animals on the planet. Schools of hammerhead sharks and pods of dolphins swim by gracefully. Barracuda and tuna gather in large clouds beneath the waves. The largest fish in the sea, the whale shark passes by on its annual migration path. But none of these amazing sights comes even close to the silent majesty the giant manta rays.
from tip to tip these winged giants can grow up to six metres across
After long periods gliding through the oceans the mantas migrate in famously large numbers to ‘cleaning stations’ surrounding the Socorro Islands. Here they take advantage of the local Clarion Angelfish who are happy to clean the much larger mantas.
here, serenity and patience are rewarded in abundance as mantas will come as close as one metre to venturing divers
to see these creatures from another world circling gracefully above you is an experience unlike any other
The exact reason as to why the mantas are so accepting of human presence in Socorro is unknown but some believe the rising bubbles from the divers and their SCUBA equipment feels like the gentle touches of the grooming fish these giants crave.
