Joe Jorlett
My 16 years spent on boats has been an education in itself. I started as a deckhand and rose up through the ranks to bosun, tender driver, steward, chief officer and finally captain of a 67m Feadship. Along the way I’ve picked up some Italian, Spanish, German, French and Turkish and these days enough Arabic to order a Coke. In my first few months at Y.CO I worked on a 90m greentech yacht design, discussed submersibles with professors at the University of Texas, closed on an ex-German fisheries protection vessel for a client and managed an additional build at Lürssen. What a job! My yachting fantasy? I’d happily sail a Hobie Cat around Cap Ferrat, but fishing with the late Ernest Hemingway on his boat Pilar in the Bahamas is the stuff of dreams.
